CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Jayla
Of course he would be late.
Jayla angled her wrist to look at her watch and smacked her lips impatiently. Grant was supposed to be leaving his office for the day, according to the schedule Sheila had given her. His limo was sitting idle by the curb, but still no Grant. And here she was, across the street, perched on a bench, trying not to be obvious, with her magazine open to the same page for the past thirty minutes.
Her phone buzzed, and Jayla snatched her eyes from the office building entrance to dig it out of her purse. She wasnât surprised when she saw Quentinâs number flashing on the screen. He was pissed at her and had been blowing her up nonstop. As if his pathetic begging was going to change her mind.
Jayla swiped her finger to reject the incoming call and groaned out loud when her phone immediately rang again. âYouâre acting like a bitch for real now,â she said after answering.
âMan, quit that shit, Jaye,â Quentin snapped. âYou know what youâre doing is fucked up.â
âFor who, boo? For you? Because you have to share your precious boy toy? Carl definitely didnât seem to mind.â
âFor Grant. Real talk. Donât do this.â
Jayla exaggerated a yawn. âOr what?â she said. âAm I supposed to be scared of you, Quentin?â
âYou should be,â he replied, his voice lowered. If Jayla had been paying attention, she wouldâve taken heed of the threat.
But her eyes had lifted just in time to see Grant emerge from the building, and sheâd jumped to her feet. âWhatever,â she said absently. âI need him to finish some business, and Iâll be done, so he can jump back in your ass as soon as possible. You have my word.â
Before he could respond, Jayla clicked the phone off and walked briskly across the street. Grant was already climbing in the limo, so Jayla quickened her pace. Her eyes took in each of the three men who were accompanying the senator, and sure enough, Carl was not in the mix. Damn, where is Carl? He is supposed to be stalling Grant. His ass better hold up his end of the bargain.
Without thinking, Jayla raised her voice so she would be heard over the downtown traffic and called, âGrant!â When Grant looked up, Jayla raised her hand and waved. She noticed his lips curve slightly, and she grinned. She just needed one more night. One more night and her plan would be set.
Jaylaâs breath caught in her throat when she was suddenly snatched from behind and slammed back first into the concrete beneath her feet. Stabbing pain penetrated her bones and had a hiss erupting from between her clenched teeth. She didnât have time to register what had happened before several figures came into view. She opened her mouth to speak, and a fist to her face snatched the question from her lips. A combination of fists and sneakers began pummeling her from every angle, and Jayla attempted to shield herself from the beating.
